ORLANDO EAST URBAN DESIGN FRAMEWORK

ORLANDO EAST, SOWETO

In Collaboration with 26'10 South Architects

2009

As the oldest township of Soweto comprising of approximately 11 000 inhabitants, Orlando East is often referred to as the Mother of Soweto. Its opportune location and rich heritage has attracted significant interest and development. In order to ensure meaningful growth of the existing fabric, an Urban Development Framework was called for to provide integrated development guidelines and spatial vision. The resulting framework responds directly to the role of the area in South Africa’s liberation struggle, its vibrant street life, distinctive town planning layout, distorted arrangement of public amenities and the Klipspruit Valley Natural System.
