SKETCHES FOR BALCONIES

JOHANNESBURG

Workshop coordinators: Marta Fernandes Calvo and Dorothee Kreutzfeldt

The proposal sought to invert the idea of a balcony as an extension of the private realm into the public, by making it an extension of the public realm into the private. Balconies as a spatial threshold is used to antagonize the static and poor contested spatial environment in Johannesburg. The balcony is conceived as a mobile scaffold that moves along the sidewalk and plugs into existing buildings disturbing static programming and provoking existing spatial conditions through forced negotiation.
