UNISA URBAN DESIGN
SUNNYSIDE, PRETORIA
The mixed-use extension of a University Campus called for the redevelopment of is adjacent land. Critical to the site was a cluster of heritage buildings and a river. To ‘protect’ the heritage structures, a forest is proposed which forms the main open space system of the design. Three building typologies where developed to suit specific programmatic and spatial requirements whilst providing a clear structural order to the site. The project was an experiment in legibility, protecting of natural and cultural resources through space-making.
