PUBLIC RELIEF
PHILLIPPI, CAPE TOWN
A consequence of shebeens (informal drinking taverns) in compact living sometimes generates some conflict. This comes in the form of shebeen patrons urinating in public or nearby homes. A response to this involved the erection of ‘urinals’ within the settlement that encouraged ‘controlled’ urinating. Local materials such as tyres, abandoned concrete channels, beer crates and stone was used. With local skills and resources these could be easily assembled and replicated as required.
