This speculative research project is done in collaboration with a researcher for their doctoral studies to subsequently inform policy-makers working in townships. Following in depth research into the risks of living in townships, six key agendas for a new township are contemplated for planners and development practitioners to consider. These relate to Health and Safety, Inclusivity, Recreation, Livelihoods, Culture and Density. For each theme a vignette was conceptualised to illustrate what radical, but immediately achievable, possibilities could be put forward. The project demonstrates through simple drawings a utopian township neighbourhood that meets and exceeds basic requirements for life.
