The cost of operating in informal neighbourhoods with limited and broken infrastructure is an additional tax to our poor. This research project commissioned by WIEGO aims to illustrate what, where and how these burdens relate to making a livelihood. The project documents the socio-economic practices domestic workers, home-based industry operators, recyclers and street traders and spatialises these to determine what the constraints to working in informal spaces are. The sites of employment and its related eco-system were documented to illustrate the spatial connected-ness of these entrepreneurs and how they generate a livelihood despite severe service delivery constraints and safety concerns. Through understanding these constraints the project seeks to influence policy towards making more effective marginalised neighbourhoods as places of economic opportunity for our majority.
