The brief called for a project that celebrated the cultural diversity of Johannesburg through food. The research undertaken influenced a response to the existing culturally specific food enclaves in the city and provide to an institutional space that provided support for food entrepreneurs to optimize their culturally specific food offerings whilst being sensitive to nutrition and costs. A large public space is created contained by a church, school and old station through the closing of the street and insertion of the Street Food Institute – a lightweight structure that accommodates test kitchens, event spaces, training facilitates and services.
