Thiresh is strangely obsessed by this city and its workings. He thinks that the most extraordinary design in architecture and urbanism is produced through it and wants to be a part of it. He curates the studio’s interests and projects by looking intently and acting incisively to reveal the wild beauty of this city. In his spare time he runs after his two kids at home and older ones at the university where he teaches.

Jessica is an architect who believes the profession has a role to play in combating social and environmental issues, with a particular interest in tackling the intersectional questions of gender, race and class inequality. Jessica is passionate about design and takes her work almost as seriously as her vegan diet.
JOHANNA VON STEIN
STUDIO MANAGEMENT / ARCHITECT
Upon visiting Joburg in 2016 from Germany, Jo fell in love with the city’s chaos and complexity, inspiring her so much that she moved to the city permanently. Jo is fascinated by the challenges that come with creating sustainable urban living and is enthusiastic about public space, which, in her opinion, is one of the key elements for better urban living. She is a fantastic leader, a queen of juggling tasks makes the solve problem solving an art form. Jo’s day is not complete without her 5am run. Just her, her headphones and the open road.
JIAXIN YAN GONG
UNIT LEAD / ARCHITECT
Yan is intrigued by the delicate underworkings of the city and believes in the importance of holding these in space to acknowledge their contributions in the construction of our spaces (social and political). She is obsessed about the translation of these observations and ideas into (form) so as to speculate on the potential of the underworkings.
Kyle is a candidate Architect with a passion for both design and realisation. He takes a particular hands on approach to engage within disciplines of evolving Architectural technologies and effective design strategies. His design interests lie in adaptive stategies that challenge the current redundancy within Architectural practices. He is a real team player that is always willing to fix a chair or put up a bracket.
Sarah is obsessed with the (seemingly benign) everyday architectures of Johannesburg. Interested in the politics of the body and space, she sees the potential for everyday spaces to be reconfigured, imagining alternative forms of social agency. Sarah concerns herself with finding new ways of interrogating and understanding “architecture”, which to her means not just buildings and cities, but structures of thinking, logic, and protocols. Sometimes she reads feminist manifestos and watches true crime documentaries.
CANDIDATE ARCHITECTURAL TECHNOLOGIST
Sumeet is an Architectural Graduate who is curious about the spaces, opportunities and connections which bridges strata of the society. He draws parallels between the convolutions of South African and Indian cities layered within the urban fabric. He believes in community participatory designs which reflects through the research. Travel and fitness driven enthusiast, he often investigates the city through his own lens.

Sinini is engrossed by the complexities of "the majesty of the human project" urban living and culture, how through design outcomes the accommodation of human life, having multiple dreams of better futures, dreams of present co-existence and better histories, and negotiating between all these dreams. His inquisitive nature through cycles of idea-testing and examination are his toolkit to ultimately insight + action + change. Coupled with this he believes that life and practice ought to be playful which is the truest expression of human experience, non-scripted and open to discovery. He is always ready to let the jokes fly.
