THIRESH GOVENDER

STUDIO DIRECTOR

---

Thiresh is strangely obsessed by this city and its workings. He thinks that the most extraordinary design in architecture and urbanism is produced through it and wants to be a part of it. He curates the studio’s interests and projects by looking intently and acting incisively to reveal the wild beauty of this city. In his spare time he runs after his two kids at home and older ones at the university where he teaches.

JOHANNA VON STEIN

STUDIO MANAGER / PROJECT LEAD

---

Upon visiting Joburg in 2016 from Germany, Jo fell in love with the city’s chaos and complexity, which inspired her to move to the city permanently. Jo is fascinated by the challenges that come with creating sustainable urban living and is enthusiastic about public space, one of the key elements for better urban living. She is a fantastic leader, a queen of juggling tasks and makes problem solving an art form. Jo’s day is not complete without her 5am run. Just her, her headphones and the open road.

SARAH HARDING

CANDIDATE ARCHITECT

---

Sarah is obsessed with the (seemingly benign) everyday architectures of Johannesburg. She sees the potential for everyday spaces to be reconfigured, imagining alternative forms of social agency. Sarah concerns herself with finding new ways of understanding “architecture”, which to her means not just buildings and cities, but structures of thinking, logic, and protocols. Sometimes she reads feminist manifestos and watches true crime documentaries.
