Through a forensic and critical eye, the Unit investigates the subversive and shadowy economies that shape Johannesburg across class, geography and architectural typology. It works on a hunch that the rituals, practices and tactics that are employed by these economies and their agents are some of the most prolific forces that define our most inventive spaces. Through the careful analysis and documentation of how these spaces are composed, we are able to redeploy these insights towards a more purposeful and impactful architecture.
