JOHANNESBURG FRESH PRODUCE MARKET

Client: JDA

Category: Architecture

Location: City Deep, Johannesburg

Date: 2019

The Joburg Market is responsible for the receiving and distribution of fresh produce through its precinct comprising warehousing, trading halls, and related logistics. In response to ad-hoc development and poor performance, the spatial strategy was to unfold a sequence of catalytic and coordinated infrastructure investments over time. These are hinged on the financial priorities and logistics systems that drive the market. The idea of a Smart Market seeks to increase the performance and operation of the market through re-organizing spaces of the market to be better suited to a changing future. The proposal presents new hybrid entrances, a public trading hall, logistics super high-ways, agro-processing villages, and a consolidated trading floor.  The architectural language aims to be bold industrial interventions that are clear and relate to the operations served.
